Beyond the Instrument

Beyond the Instrument: A Repertoire Project is a personal initiative for Wheeler, grounded in a commitment to explore and share the saxophone’s expressive potential. Designed to expand the instrument’s repertoire, the project features performances and recordings of lesser-known works, arrangements, and transcriptions alongside newly commissioned pieces by composers representing a broad spectrum of voices, perspectives, and musical approaches. Through these collaborations, Wheeler seeks to cultivate a 21st-century saxophone canon that reflects diverse experiences and artistic viewpoints. Centered on communal and expressive music-making, Beyond the Instrument aspires to resonate widely—with saxophonists and non-saxophonists alike—inviting audiences and performers into a shared conversation about creativity, connection, and the saxophone’s remarkable versatility across styles and genres.
