Interested in studying saxophone at LSU?
Studying saxophone at LSU provides a rich, high-level musical education within a vibrant and collaborative community. Led by Dr. Kendra Wheeler, the studio brings together undergraduate and graduate students from a wide range of backgrounds.
Through personalized instruction, students develop technical mastery, pedagogical skills, and artistic creativity—preparing them to excel as performers, educators, and innovative thinkers.
Beyond lessons, students engage in various performance opportunities—from saxophone quartets and octets to contemporary ensembles—while participating in masterclasses, guest artist sessions, and interdisciplinary discussions.
At LSU, saxophone study goes beyond the instrument. It’s about joining a community dedicated to excellence, innovation, and developing the next generation of artistic leaders.
PROGRAM STRUCTURE
1:1 Applied Lessons
Weekly lessons are a cornerstone of personal and musical development. They provide a space for both technical and artistic growth, as well as an opportunity for students to better understand themselves and discover how they learn most effectively. These lessons are designed to support each student in becoming the best musician and person they can be, regardless of their degree program or future career path.
Each lesson is assessed based on the student’s preparation and evidence of meaningful progress over the course of the week. Lesson material is tailored to each student’s individual needs and level. Consistent, focused practice is essential.
Note: Students who choose to participate in multiple non-required ensembles are still expected to maintain regular, focused practice and dedicate sufficient time to their personal musical growth and development.
Studio Class
This weekly class is a forum for performing, discussing, and exploring various topics central to developing well-rounded musicians. While rooted in saxophone pedagogy and performance, the class is open to broader musical study and professional growth areas.
Students will regularly perform for their peers and receive constructive feedback from classmates and Dr. Wheeler. In addition to performance, the class includes presentations and lectures on a wide range of topics, including pedagogy, musicianship, musicology, music theory, contemporary music and techniques, and professional development.
Additional activities for members of the LSU Saxophone Studio include:
